Moving Elderly Home with Family |
Sometimes the difficult decision of where to place our loved ones concerns
and frightens us. This placement decision is as crucial as many other
things in life. Some find that nursing facilities or hospice care is too
costly, and opt for moving the patient into their home. This can be seen as
either a blessing or even a burden. The patient, if feeling rejected and
like a burden on the family, can feel terrible.
It is crucial to take into consideration your loved one's thoughts and
feelings regarding the move. Kind words and patience will make all the
difference in the world. They need to feel accepted- allow them to bring in
their pictures or even a pet, something familiar. Remember that they feel
as if they have no control or say over their own lives anymore. They now
live in a new place and are eating, sleeping, and even going to the bathroom
when someone else tells them to.
Also, remember to speak to your children about bringing in your parents.
They may feel uncomfortable at first, but encourage questions and discussion. The quicker your kids are able to accept the new change, the
smoother the moving transition will go for your parents.
Always strive to keep the transition smooth for your loved one. Remember to consider their feelings and take care of the feelings of your family, as
well.
